Britain has recently installed a handful of surveilance cameras with loudspeakers attached. Whoever is behind the cameras can speak to the people they are watching. The idea is that the people monitoring the cameras will be able to give verbal warnings to people who are fighting, littering, peeing on the street, etc…
I cannot help but think of this as being very creepy…anyone who has read 1984 will certainly agree. In the novel 1984, the government had installed “telescreens” everywhere, including inside people’s homes. The watchers could see and hear what went on in every corner of your house.
