That is certainly something to keep in mind. It is amazing that even in 2006 we have to worry about safe drinking water. I'm confident that my hygiene is better than that of elementary students, so I'm not terribly worried about dangerous bacteria in my water bottle. I also don't wash my water bottles with hot soapy water. Still - the idea of the plastic breaking down over time is worrisome. Time to break out the old-fashioned glasses!
